How do we find a good marriage therapist and how do they help to save a marriage? Can they teach people to be good parents too?

A therapist cannot wave a magic wand and save marriages or make parents good parents, but a therapist can help people who are willing to change and do things differently. The best way to find a good one is to ask around, but be sure that you feel comfortable with any therapist you choose. In many ways a good therapist-client relationship is like any other relationship: you have to trust them.
With that being said, I’ve used many therapists. The marriage therapist did not save my marriage (it was dead, nobody could have helped) but my individual therapist did save my sanity.
They work through identifying and talking out issues, helping you reach compromises, and showing you how to have more effective communication skills. As far as parenting goes, they help you to identify what isn’t working in handling your children and help you learn skills that will help you as a parent, whether it’s discipline, etc.
As far as finding a good one, ask around or ask a pastor or something to recommend one. Look around and don’t be afaid to visit a few or find a new one if you don’t feel like you both have a rapport with the counselor.
Good luck.
